maxima: interior

The interior and custom electronics modifications are described on this page.  All of the modifications have been designed to keep the car looking fairly stock while improving overall functionality.

Recaro Seats

The front seats are blue Recaro bucket seats from a 99 Chevy Lumina 9C3 (Police Package).  Both seats have manually adjustable seat backs, however, only the passenger seat has a slider.  The drivers seat is bolted to the floor for maximum head room (easier to fit a helmet) so there it has no fore/aft adjustment. They fit quite well and the blue cloth matches the interior.  The rear seats are going to be upholstered in the same material.

240Z Steering Wheel

The steering wheel is restored from a 240Z and looks awesome in the car (still have to paint the center on the horn). It is much thinner and has a nicer feel than the original steering wheel.

The wheel and spokes were wet sanded with 400 grit paper, and then the rim was carefully taped. The spokes were primed with three coats of "Rust-Oleum Gray Automotive Primer" sanding between each coat, and then three coats of "Rust-Oleum Black Semi-Gloss Protective Enamel" were applied. Then, the rim was uncovered, and the spokes were taped. The first coat of "Minwax Polyshades (stain & polyurethane in one-step) Royal Walnut Gloss 450" was applied, then carefully rubbed with extra fine steel wool, and a second coat was applied. The final product is quite nice. The cylinders for canceling the turn signals also had to be modified. If you would like more information on modifying them, please email me at .

Short Shifter

Two options are easily attainable for a short shifter in the Maxima's 5-speed tranny: shortening the original shifter or installing a 280ZX shifter.

The picture on the right shows the original shifter on the left. The middle shifter is an original shifter shortened by 70mm and re-threaded to fit the original style shifter knob. The shifter on the far right is from a 280ZX 5-speed (not Borg-Warner). Notice the bushing on the 280ZX shifter is oriented 180 degrees as compared to the Maxima shifters. Flip the bushing in the 280ZX shifter to get the shorter throw in the transmission by changing the pivot point. Both the 280ZX shifter (with flipped bushing) and shortened Maxima shifter reduce shifter throw by 36%. These lengths offer a comfortable shift. The shifters could be shortened further, but a different shifter boot would be required.

Gauge Pod

The gauge pod holds two 2 1/16" gauges. It is an Autometer pod for an 88-91 Honda CRX.  The CRX had the closest A pillar contour to the Maxima.  It was trimmed and molded to the stock pillar and then painted to match the interior.  It ended up being a very clean installation and looks good.  It holds the boost gauge and air/fuel ratio gauge.

Audio

The link above connects to the page dedicated to the audio component of the car.

RFID Lock System

The door locks are RFID actuated via proximity sensor under the drivers door handle as seen on the right. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and is used in many places. A good example is the "fast lane" at a toll booth. The "passes" to get through use RFID technology to pass an ID to the system which in turn charges the owner's account.

This system allows the user to register up to 32 different "keys" and has a range of only 3 inches. The RFID key is inside the Datsun key fob on the Maxima's key chain. When it is passed under the door handle, the receiver checks the key's ID with the allowed IDs for the system.  If it matches, the receiver unlocks (or locks) the car's doors.  A latching relay is used to switch from lock to unlock mode.  Each time the doors are locked, it switches to unlock mode, and visa versa.  The system is currently being modified to automatically lock the doors 15 seconds after unlocking them if no doors have been opened as a safety precaution.
